Ice cream trucks hit sour note with Prairie Village residents

Posted: Updated:

First it was an oversized Christmas decoration that upset some Prairie Village residents. Now it's the quintessential ice cream truck drawing the ire of some residents.

Is the small town going to get a reputation as cranky town?

Trucks bearing frosty treats and blaring earworm music that are magnets for children roam streets across the nation.

But one group in Prairie Village says the music is too loud and played too often and too long.

"Every single night, like clockwork, these ice cream trucks are blaring Scott Joplin's theme from the Sting or Christmas music in July," resident Chuck Baldee explained. "They're driving through my neighborhood."

He said every night at 5:30 that a truck rolls up trying to sell his daughter a $5 Popsicle. He said loud music constantly blares throughout the area.

"I don't want to be the guy yelling at the ice cream people to go away," he said. "I'd rather see them come by once in a while as a novelty. That would be fine."

Kansas City-based Frosty Treats, which operates the majority of the trucks rolling through Prairie Village, said they want to work with residents so that there are no problems.

The Prairie Village council last year imposed restrictions on Christmas decorations in residential areas. The city said the council can take another look at the ordinances regulating ice cream and other food trucks, but that noise is a police issue.

Baldee works out of a food truck. He said he doesn't understand why he can't sell frosty treats on the side of the road but ice cream companies can.
