Mesa man helps save blind neighbor from burning home

MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A raging fire has badly injured a man and destroyed his Mesa home.

The Mesa Fire Department said flames broke out just before 7 p.m. Sunday at Mesa Madrid Townhouses near University and Standage.

The man, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, suffered second- and third-degree burns and is being treated at Maricopa County Medical Center in Phoenix.

A Mesa Fire Department official said a neighbor helped the man to safety.

"We stepped outside and I thought I smelled something burning and I look over and my neighbor is hanging out the window by one arm," said Chris Hansen, who lives next door to the man.

So, he had his wife call 911 and Hansen sprang to action.

"I ran over and made him jump, because the whole house was just engulfed in flames," he said.

Hansen said he was especially worried about his neighbor because the man is blind.

"Right now he lives by himself," said Hansen. "He's got a dog, but we don't know what happened to the dog."

Firefighters eventually found the man's beloved pet in his dog house on the patio.

The pup was frightened, but otherwise OK.

It's an ordeal Hansen said he won't soon forget.

"When I looked in that bottom window as he was falling down – I mean, it was like out of a movie," he said. "Fire was whooshing up. And, it was kind of like, holy crap – that's bad!"

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

However, the fire official told CBS5 News it likely started downstairs. The damage was contained to one unit.
