LITCHFIELD PARK, AZ (CBS5) -
A 2-year-old girl drowned during a family gathering in Litchfield Park Sunday afternoon, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.
The girl's name was not immediately released. Deputies said she did not live at the home.
The victim had wandered off and about five minutes later, she was found floating in the pool in the 5700 block of North 132nd Avenue.
Someone at the home administered CPR, and fire crews transported the girl to West Valley Hospital in critical condition. She was pronounced dead a short time later.
Sheriff's deputies said there was a gate around the pool but it was propped open at the time.
"There was a fence and there were adults; however, the child still managed to get back there into the pool and that's why it's very important we keep an eye on them at all times," said Joaquin Enriquez with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
"It's scary, it makes me grateful I don't have a pool because I can put my kids in the backyard and not worry about it too much," said neighbor Jim Roberts. "But almost everyone around here has pools."
