GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A Peoria man has pleaded not guilty in a fatal stabbing during a fight involving several people at a Glendale park late.

Maricopa County court spokesman Vincent Funari said Andrew Patrick Aschenbrenner, 23, made his plea on second-degree murder charges Thursday afternoon.

The Glendale Police Department said homicide detectives believe Aschenbrenner stabbed the victim during the altercation.

Two men and two women were sitting at Sahuaro Ranch Park near 63rd and Peoria avenues about 10:20 p.m. when they were approached by four other males, said Glendale police Lt. Johnny Arevalo.

He said gang signs were flashed and the groups got into an argument.

The four men left but returned with two friends and jumped the other two males, stabbing Darrick Hendrix Jr., 23, under an arm while the other victim, Robert Newman III, 23, suffered severe cuts and bruises, Arevalo said. Hendrix died at a nearby hospital, Arevalo said. Newman is expected to survive.

One adult and two juveniles were also brought in for questioning, Glendale police said. All three were released and aggravated assault charges will be sent to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review.

Aschenbrenner's next court appearance is scheduled for August 7.
