PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 56-year-old Phoenix man is in jail on suspicion he beat his 73-year-old wife, police said.

Alfonso Moriega is accused of using his closed fists to repeatedly punch his wife in the face, chest and back Tuesday at about 11:30 p.m., according to a court document.

The victim is described as someone who can't defend herself. She is frail and requires a walker to get around.

The suspect's wife told police this isn't the first time her husband beat her. She said he has assaulted her multiple times in the past.

The woman was taken to the hospital for possible broken bones.

Adult Protective Services was notified.
