Teen, 16, dies after Kansas City officer shoots him

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A 16-year-old died Tuesday morning after he was shot by a Kansas City police officer.

Authorities identified the teen as Tyler W. Wilkins of Kansas City. Police originally said the victim was a man, but clarified Tuesday that he was a teen.

Police dispatchers initially said the officers were responding to a disturbance call Monday when shots were fired at them and they returned fire.

However, officers now say that was not the case.

A department spokesman said officers recognized a suspect that they were seeking and attempted to stop him. Wilkins began to run, and officers said he pulled a gun on them. At that point, one of the two officers fired a department-issued weapon.

Police have not determined whether Wilkins fired shots or not.

Both officers have been placed on paid leave. Neither was injured.

The teen underwent surgery Monday night at Truman Medical Center and later died.

The shooting occurred at 4:10 p.m. at Wheeling and Smart avenues in the northeast section of Kansas City. Refresh this page for updates and watch KCTV5 News.
