Metro North Mall rebirth will mean demolition of existing building

Posted: Updated:

The once vibrant Metro North Mall attracts fewer and fewer shoppers, and an effort to give new life to the Northland shopping center is planned.

The lights are on and the escalators run. The fountains bubble. But shoppers head west to Zona Rose or other shopping meccas rather than Metro North, which is located at 400 NW Barry Rd.

Some Northland residents said they would welcome an indoor mall that would protect them from the elements.

M.D. Management, the owner of Metro North, announced Wednesday plans to tear down the existing mall and replace it with a new enclosed mall.

"It's conceptional at this point. We have still got a lot of work to do," Garry Hayes of M.D. Management said. "I don't want to stand here and represent to you guys that this is a slam dunk, but I guarantee that our hearts, our efforts, our money, our vision is all in the direction that I'm going to show you today."

The new mall would be smaller and have two anchor stores rather than the current four. The Macy's store would be revamped.

The second anchor store hasn't been named publicly.

The hope is to have the reborn Metro North Mall open by the 2015 holiday season.
