Couple finds missing woman, 86, on side of interstate in Iowa

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office has canceled a Silver Alert for a missing Lake Quivira woman.

The missing woman was found on Interstate 29 in Iowa after her vehicle stopped operating.

Ellen "Jane" Cates, 86, was last seen about 7 a.m. Sunday. She was driving to her church at 79th and Lowell streets, but she never made it there.

She suffers from dementia, the sheriff's office said.

She was found before 3:30 p.m. Monday. The Sheriff's Office said she was OK and was reunited with her family.

A Tarkio couple saw the woman walking alongside Interstate 29 about 10 miles north of the Missouri border. The woman thought it was still Sunday and was trying to get to church.

The vehicle had run out of gas and was broken down on the side of the interstate. Roger Parshall said he and his wife, Nikki, were able to convince Cates to get in his vehicle. He said he knew he had to help her as vehicles flew by on the highway.

"We just knew that we had to turn around and help her. It wasn't normal for an elderly lady to be walking down the road," Nikki Parshall said.

The couple took Cates to the Atchison County Sheriff's Office headquarters in Missouri. They didn't know at that point about the Silver Alert.

Family members traveled north from the Kansas City area to be reunited with Cates.

The Parshalls were traveling to Omaha, but never made it there. They said they were happy to help and do not consider their actions heroic.

Cates was driving a silver and gold 2004 Lexus RX with Kansas tag 520CGN.
