CBS 3 takes a trip around Stafford Motor Speedway

STAFFORD, CT (WSHM) -

Sunday night's Valley Sports Replay marked the first night viewers had the chance to win tickets to see the races at Stafford Motor Speedway.

Earlier this month, CBS 3 got to take a personal tour of the track.

In the world of racing, it is called a "short track," but it is not short on speed. Stafford Motor Speedway has been hosting auto races in northeastern Connecticut since World War II ended.

"It is a great place to learn how to race," said Bob Potter, a five-time series champion at Stafford. "I think if you race at Stafford, you can race anywhere. It is just a beautiful track."

Potter has been racing cars for over 50 years, but he says lately there's been a changing of the guard.

"The young guys learn from the older guys," said Potter. "It seems like the younger generation is taking over. The guys I have raced with, for the most part, they have retired."

Potter may have retired from competitive racing, but he is visible around the track. After I suited up and climbed in, he was my 120 mph tour guide around the speedway.

Potter said some of the cars at Stafford can hit up to 140 mph thanks to ever-changing technology.

"Years ago, you just jacked the right front, left rear or something like that with a jacking bolt and that was it," Potter stated. "Now, there is so much technology getting the front end set up right."

Potter believes anyone who makes the trip out to Stafford is witnessing something special.

"Winning the championship at Stafford Motor Speedway, that is the greatest thing that could ever happen to you," said Potter. "I have won championships at Waterford, but there is nothing like Stafford Motor Speedway."

Tune in to Valley Sports Replay every Sunday at 11:15 p.m. for another chance to win tickets to see the races at Stafford.
