Police investigate rash of vehicle break-ins in North Kansas City

NORTH KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Investigators are looking for the person responsible who broke into a handful of vehicles in a parking lot across from a police station.

Authorities said at least six or seven cars were broken into at the North Kansas City Lofts, located in the 700 block of Armour Road.  Victims said the robberies had to happen sometime after 1 a.m. Sunday.

"I got home about 1 a.m. this morning, and our cousin gave us a call and said, 'Your car has been broken into.'   And, we were just like, 'oh, man,'" victim Sharnel Drayton said.

Thieves broke out the windows of the vehicles, jimmied some of the locks to get inside the cars and stole some items.

Ironically, the lofts are located right across the street from the North Kansas City Police Department and adjacent to a North Kansas City fire station.

"My car was parked right in front of the fire house, and we've got, you know, the police station right across the street.   I've been here for two years.   It's kind of like a safe neighborhood.   I never thought it would happen to be, but you never be too sure," Drayton said.

Officers were on the scene Sunday morning taking reports from the victims.

If anyone has any information about the break-ins, they are urged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
