SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

This week, a little kitten has been through the depths of earth and back.

He was stuck in what may have been a snake hole next to a Spartanburg family's home.

A Spartanburg Animal Control officer dug him out, and now he's safe and well-fed, but he's the product of stray cats that need their population better controlled.

Homeowner Lynn Ferguson said she and her husband heard meowing coming from a hole in the ground next to the house for two or three days. They said they tried to dig to get him, but they didn't want to hurt him, so they called animal control.

The officer, Jessica Lancaster, had to dig with her hands to pull the kitten to safety.

"He would poke his head through the hole, but you could tell he was stuck. He was trying to come through and he just wouldn't fit," said Lancaster.

Ferguson had been feeding a few stray cats for about a year. She said she's seen multiple litters born in that time.

Spartanburg Animal Control will take those cats to spay them with a TNR grant they received last year. TNR stands for "trap, neuter, release." It's a way the city of Spartanburg is trying to control the stray animal population.

The cats will be released back to their neighborhood, but won't be able to keep breeding as they have.
