Senate sending Brewer bills despite veto threat

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -

Senate President Andy Biggs is ignoring Gov. Jan Brewer and sending her bills despite a moratorium on signings the governor put in place more than two weeks ago.

Biggs said Thursday he's never been personally told by the governor not to transmit bills for her signature. He sent her five this week.

Brewer spokesman Matthew Benson says the governor's office clearly communicated her wishes. He also said she will act soon on the bills.

The signing moratorium was put in place because Brewer wants the Legislature to act on a budget and Medicaid expansion. The Senate finally passed both last week but they await action in the House.

Four bills Biggs sent are relatively minor. Senate Bill 1178 would allow people to sue over potential violations of religious freedom.
