Family seeks justice after distracted driver plows into girl, 11

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

It has been a difficult and long road to recovery for an 11-year-old victim of a hit-and-run. The girl's mother is making another plea to the driver responsible to turn herself in.

No one needs any medical training to see that Shumyia Timley is hurting.

She is confined to her bed or wheelchair, unable to walk on her own, as she recovers from a ruptured ear drum, broken arm and shattered pelvis.

"I'm still having nightmares about it. The little bit of sleep I am getting, I jump back up because I keep having the same images," Shumyia's mother, Shunmon Timley, said.

Her mother still can't shake the image of Shumyia lying in the street near The Paseo and Gregory Boulevard after police say a woman driving a red Oldsmobile Alero, talking on her cell phone, ran her over and kept on driving.

Shumyia doesn't remember what happened, and her mother has a hard time trying to explain how someone could run over a little girl and keep going.

"She goes back and forth. One minute she is happy and fine, the next minute she is crying again and doesn't know why it happened. She is 11 years old and wants to know why this happened to her," Shunmon Timley said.

Police said they are working several strong leads, but still no arrests in the case.

Now, her mother is pleading with the driver to do the right thing, so she won't have to worry about other children in her neighborhood.

"I hope she turns herself in. Get it over with. I'm really starting to wonder are they ever going to catch her? I just don't want her to get away with what she did," Shunmon Timley said.

Shumyia has Medicaid, but her mother is worried that won't cover all her medical expenses. She is working to set up a fund, and once that is complete, KCTV5 will pass that information along.
