NEW LONDON, CT (WFSB) -

Vice President Joe Biden gave the keynote address during the 132nd commencement for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London Wednesday morning.

"This is not your grandfather's Coast Guard," Biden said about the "traditional  ceremony."

But Biden was also serious.

"You alone are trusted with protecting 95,000 miles of U.S. shoreline," he said.

Families gathered and took their seats as 224 cadets including 14 from Connecticut got one step closer to becoming officers.

"Parents, it's your day too. So, Class of 2013, get off your seats and salute your parents," Biden said.

Some of the graduates told Eyewitness they were able to choose where they want to be stationed, with the most popular spot being Hawaii.

But the rest did not get that choice, and now they will join 42,000 active members of the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Class of 2013 includes 30 percent women.

"I think the 30 percent of women was definitely something that appealed to me," said graduate Ann Fecskovics. "The Coast Guard is the only service where all the jobs are open to women."

The U.S. Coast Guard band set the stage.

Officer Jonathn Paquette of Groton said he is happy to have job for the next five years. During this time, the men and women of the Class of 2013 are committed to serving the U.S. Coast Guard.

"I was born right down the road at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital," Paquette said.

Joseph Sullivan was the Springhetti for the Class of 2013.

"Everyone of us has the tenacity, work ethic and skill," Sullivan said. "Every single one of us could go where we want."
