Pima County board OKs tentative budget of $1.27 B

TUCSON, AZ (AP) -

The Pima County Board of Supervisors has approved a tentative $1.27 billion budget for the next fiscal year.

Officials said Tuesday that the approval came on a 3-2 vote and caps the total budget allocation and the proposed property tax levy.

The board can reduce the expenditures or transfer funds among agencies, but cannot increase the budget prior to adoption of the final budget on June 18.

The adopted tentative budget is almost $4 million higher than the one recommended by the County Administrator last month.

But it's 14 percent lower than the budget of six years ago when the recession began.

Since the 2007-2008 fiscal year, budgets for general fund departments have been cut by more than 11 percent and the county workforce has shrunk by nearly 13 percent.
