Mom gets 13 years for chase, crash that killed daughter

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The woman that led Spartanburg County deputies on a chase along Interstate 85 and caused a crash that killed her 7-year-old daughter pleaded guilty in court on Tuesday.

Errika Shelton, 27, was sentenced to 13 years in prison plus five years in probation in connection with the Aug. 6, 2012 chase and crash, according to FOX Carolina's Adrian Acosta who was in court Tuesday for her hearing.

Acosta said Shelton asked for mercy, as did her mother, and accepted responsibility for what happened during her hearing.

Deputies said they tried to pull Shelton over after she improperly changed lanes and followed too close to another vehicle. The chase went on for several miles at high speeds in the rental car she was driving.

South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said Shelton was going 91 mph when she hit the guard rail, ejecting her daughter Queniya Shelton, who later died at the hospital.

Erika Shelton pleaded guilty to failure to stop for a blue light with a death involved, habitual traffic offender with a death, reckless homicide, child neglect, driving under suspension third or subsequent offense and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

The judge who sentenced Shelton said if she violates probation, she could face an additional 20 years in prison.
