2 old lions retire at Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum

Posted: Updated:

It's retirement time for two mountain lions at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum near Tucson.

Museum officials say the lions are about 13 years old and have arthritis that makes it difficult for them to get up and down the exhibit space's steep slope.

According to the Arizona Daily Star, mountain lions' average life expectancy in the wild is about 8 to 13 years but that healthy lions in captivity can live much longer.

Museum Executive Director Craig Ivanyi says the two aging lions will stay at the museum and live out their lives in a non-exhibit space created for them.

They arrived at the museum in 1999 as orphans from a wildlife rehabilitation center in Phoenix.

The museum has a new lion for exhibition.
