A local cab driver is speaking up after a customer pulled a gun on him. A few hours later the same suspect was the target of a standoff with police.
"I'm happy to get out of there with my life. Glad to be alive," said the Shawnee, KS, taxi driver who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons.
It wasn't the way the taxi driver had hoped to end his shift.
"He pulled a gun on me and said, ‘I hate to do this, but it is what it is. Maybe next time,'" the cab driver said.
It was just before 1 a.m. Friday when the driver said he dropped a man off near 79th and Hemlock streets in Overland Park, KS. The man pulled a gun and refused to pay for a $28 cab ride.
As police were busy investigating the incident, another call came in a few hours later. It was a domestic disturbance between roommates and family members and it was just around the corner at 75th Street and Antioch Road.
"We got a call from a subject about an armed disturbance inside the house. Several shots were fired and someone was physically assaulting them," Overland Park Officer Gary Mason said.
When police arrived, the suspect was still inside so officers set up a perimeter and the standoff began. A short time later the suspect surrendered and police said they quickly figured out the suspect at the house and the one involved in the cab incident were one and the same.
"It didn't take long to put two and two together. We got a good description from the cab driver, which helped us in our investigation," Mason said.
The person, according to authorities, is 32-year-old Christopher Pappageorge. He's now charged with three counts of aggravated assault.
No one inside the home was hurt. As for the cab driver, he's ready to face the man again - this time in court.
"As long as what I do keeps him in jail, it's one less person we have to worry about," the driver said.
