Town takes dozens of cats out of woman's home in Bloomfield

Posted: Updated:
BLOOMFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

An anonymous complaint to Bloomfield's animal control officers led to police finding a woman who was hoarding 40 cats in her home. The animals were seized from her residence Friday morning.

Bloomfield's senior animal control officer, along with a Hartford animal control officer wearing hazardous materials suits entered Kathleen Matczak's Scotland Road home to remove dozens of mostly feral cats from inside the residence.

"I have had issues at this residence before," said Chris Sparks, who is senior animal control officer for Bloomfield.

Sparks told Eyewitness News they needed to be removed for the safety of Matczak, the neighbors and the cats.

"All of them in some degree of medical compromise, a lot of them need immediate medical attention. Most of them are completely unsocialized and considered feral," Sparks said.

Matczak, who did not want to speak with Eyewitness News, was removed from her home because it was condemned due to the cluttered, unsanitary conditions.

She won't be allowed back in until it is cleaned up.

"I just feel really bad for her, because I think she's a caring and responsible person who's doing the best that she can and she never met a cat she didn't like," Sparks said.

Four van loads of cats were taken from the home, Sparks said.

Matczak may face animal cruelty charges, but that depends on the condition of the cats.
