Movie lovers say goodbye to longtime cinema landmark in Crossroads

Posted: Updated:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A silent auction is going on in the Crossroads area Thursday night as local movie lovers say goodbye to a longtime cinema landmark.

It's been a staple of the Crossroads area for over a decade, but the Screenland Repertory Theatre is going away after Friday night.

Old movie trailers, posters, nearly everything is up for silent auction Thursday as Screenland looks for a new home.

"It is very bizarre and surreal to kind of see the end of this," said Jason Chaffee, the owner of the Screenland Crossroads.

The building that had become synonymous with classic films is closing. Its owner decided to make the old historical theatre into office space.

But area classic movie lovers aren't happy with the change.

"I get it daily. A lot of people have fond memories here. I've had people come up to me and say they've proposed there, so it has a lot of sentimental value," Chaffee said.

Kansas City's own CinemaKC, a not-for profit organization that hosts events and panel discussions as well as promotes regional film makers, is also losing a home.

The popular local TV show with the same name was based at Screenland.

"This could be a great opportunity to showcase everything that we've been trying to do. We can take this horrible moment and get out there and say, ‘hey, we're here, we've been here and we represent the local independent film community,'" Steve Fuller with CinemaKC said.

While the theater's doors are about to close and the screen is about to come down, the local classic movie lovers say their hobby will only continue to grow and moving out of the building is a minor setback.

"I would like people to view repertory cinema as a museum or your local library - it's a celebration of a part of our culture," Chaffee said.

It's a culture that will continue to have a huge following no matter where the movie is played.

Organizers of Thursday's live auction were hoping to raise $12,000 to help them find a new home.

There will also be a final showing bash featuring live music on Friday. Click here for more information.
