New high mile-per-gallon car for sale and visiting Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

With the cost of gas on the rise, many are searching for more fuel-efficient cars and there is now a car, made in America, that gets 84 miles to the gallon and costs under $7,000.

It could be the car we all thought as kids we'd be driving by now.

The only problem is the new Elio has got three wheels and, in most states, it's considered a motorcycle. Still, it's clever eco-friendly design has folks talking.

"If you look around here we have far too many Suburbans running down the road with one person in them," Bob Storck of Kansas City, MO, said.

"It's kind of nice. In town it'd be great, but I'd be scared on the highway," said Cam Gallehugh of Overland Park, KS.

The Elio was introduced just a few months ago and the first cars will hit the streets in July 2014. It's like nothing people have ever seen on the highway before, but they will soon.

"People will immediately sit in the vehicle and understand how it fits in their world," said Chip Stempeck, the vice president of marketing for Elio Motors.

"You're sitting in there pretty much like an airplane or a race car," said Gino Raffin, the vice president of manufacturing.

The Elios' gas engine gets 84 miles to the gallon on the highway and 49 in the city.

It's small and the two-passenger seats sit front to back, but it's expected to get a five-star safety rating and comes with three airbags.

"You will have an entire roll cage around you made of reinforced steel, you'll have ABS (anti-lock braking system) brakes," Stempeck said.

But maybe the most amazing thing about the oddly-shaped car is its price tag. It costs just $6,800 new and that comes with air conditioning, power windows, power locks and a radio.

And the one-liter, three-cylinder engine has a little giddyup.

"It's extremely safe when you go through several lane change maneuvers and it will go 70 (mph) easy," Raffin said.

The car will supply 1,500 new American jobs and people might actually be able to get the car for free, depending on how they look at it.

"You're used to putting $90 in your gas tank, with this it will be $30. That difference will go toward making your car payment, which ultimately ends up being a free vehicle," Stempeck said.

It leaves people wondering if the unique design and idea will make it to the finish line with American drivers.

There will be a free and open to the public showing of the car Friday near Crown Center from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information on the Elio, go to Eliomotors.com.
