Community rallies to help family rebuild home destroyed by fire

Posted: Updated:

A couple that lost everything in a Thanksgiving house fire are now homeowners once again thanks to the kindness of strangers and a unique program.

They are one of the first families to participate in the Neighborhood Stabilization Program on Quindaro Boulevard.

Last year on Thanksgiving Day, the family helplessly watched their home in the 3400 block of Delavan Avenue go up in flames.

Their community rallied to help them once again have a home of their own.

The flames destroyed the only home Luther Walker had ever known. He grew up and raised his children there.

"It's just so hard, because I never ask for help. In my life, I always work for myself, took care of my business. I've never been on assistance," Walker said.

About six months later, Walker can now reflect inside his new home.

"When I looked back and saw my house, it just (did) something to me. I normally don't bawl a lot, but it started something for me. I started crying. I just couldn't control it," Walker said.

Soon old friends, co-workers and even strangers offered clothing, food and shelter.

"It was just something to see when you see people that don't even know you help you when you need it the most. I have never been one to ask for help," Walker

Kansas Sen. David Haley also helped the family by setting up a fund for donations at Liberty Bank.

Walker said his thank you list is long and wanted to make sure he didn't leave anyone out.

"I wanted to probably take an ad out or something to list everyone," Walker said.

Along with the community support, his family got help from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program known as NSP3.

It allows the Unified Government of Wyandotte County to offer new and rehabilitated houses at affordable prices.

"It's something. I loved my old house but this was just a dream. Something we never thought would happen," Walker said.

Anyone wanting to participate in the NSP3 program must meet income and credit requirements to qualify for a mortgage from a lending institution.

The program comes with a property tax rebate for a period of 10 years, click here for more information.
