Murderer freed from prison under plea agreement

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (AP) -

A 34-year-old Arizona woman who has spent more than half her life behind bars for a 1992 Tucson killing is now free.

Gina Celaya was released Wednesday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and being sentenced to time already served.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that Celaya at age 14 in 1994 was convicted in the 1992 killing of 50-year-old Trinidad Lopez.

She said Lopez took her to the desert and that she shot him after he tried to sexually assault her.

Celaya left Lopez him to die, taking his truck and then going joyriding with friends.

She was convicted of first-degree murder and armed robbery and sentenced to life in prison.

She's now free because prosecutors offered a plea agreement after an appeals court ordered a new trial.
