KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A 3-year-old boy is safe after being found wandering and trying to cross a busy road early Thursday morning, police say.

The child was found about 5:20 a.m. when a motorist spotted the toddler trying to cross Truman Road near Belmont Avenue on the city's northeast side.

The motorist called police saying the boy was dressed only in underwear.

When police arrived on the scene, they were able to determine where the child lived.

They took the child back to a home located in the 1500 block of Belmont Avenue, which is just south of Truman Road, and discovered his 9-year-old bother home alone.

Both children were in good condition and not injured.

The mother returned home with her two older children shortly after 6:30 a.m.

Police said the mother works an overnight janitorial job, and she takes her two older children with her to work. Police said she told her boss that she didn't have a babysitter and wouldn't be able to work her shift.

The mother admits to leaving her 9-year-old and 3-year-old children home alone.

She told police this was the first time something like this has happened.

Authorities initially said the mother would face charges, but reversed course Thursday afternoon and said no charges would be sought.

Her 12-year-old son, Matthew Montes, said he is glad his mother was able to clear the situation up. He emphasized that this wasn't a normal situation.

"It was an emergency because she didn't want to stay alone like somebody to come and rob us," he said. "My mom really cares about us since we were born. She just needed to do this errand really fast."
