Former Mesa Mayor Wayne Brown dies

MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Former Mesa Mayor Wayne Brown died Tuesday, the city said.

Brown served as mayor from 1996 to 2000. He also served as a council member from 1968 to 1976.

Brown led the effort to build the Mesa Arts Center.

After stepping down, he and his wife Kathye led the private fundraising efforts. Working as a team, they broke their fundraising goal of $3.5 million by more than $1 million.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 18 at 9 a.m. at the LDS Encinas Ward, 1100 N. Cooper Rd. in Gilbert.
