Grandparent's questions lead to new court time for sex offender - KCTV5 News

Grandpa’s concerns land registered sex offender in hot water

A registered sex offender is in trouble with the law for sitting on the bench at a basketball game.

Darin Mason, a registered sex offender of 11 1/2 years, runs a basketball league for school-aged children out of Riverside where he's also being investigated. What led to the current investigation was all thanks to one curious grandparent.

Bill Shull went to his grandson's basketball game in March where he asked a very simple question.

"I was over there, I asked one of the people over there what the name of the coach was. It was not somebody I had recognized and, strange as it sounds, it was something that was familiar to me and couldn't figure out what," Shull said.

Shull, a criminal defense attorney by trade, went home and did a simple Google search, and there his grandson's coach popped up as a registered sex offender.

"I was shocked and I was appalled. Based on what little I learned online, the circumstances involved someone who was very close to my grandson's age," he said.

The Clay County Prosecutor's Office said Mason was convicted of raping and sodomizing a 15-year-old girl in Platte County in 2001. He signed an agreement just last year that he would not coach or train any athletic teams with children. Yet he was heading the KC Pumas Basketball league, which often holds clinics at LeVo Sports Complex in Riverside.

"We have eight children and 21 grandchildren and I think the rule is, no matter how good a person you think you're turning your child over for sports activities, school activities, Scout activities, you need to do background checks," Shull said.

KCTV5 went to Mason's home in Lake Waukomis, MO, Tuesday. His car was in the driveway, but nobody answered the door.

Mason was arraigned in court Tuesday afternoon. He faces a Class D felony for being a sex offender and working as a coach. He could go to prison for four years.

KCTV5 emailed the KC Pumas Basketball league and has yet to hear back from them.
