Lenexa police search for man who reportedly flashed middle schoolers

LENEXA, KS (KCTV) -

Lenexa police are looking for a man who reportedly exposed himself to two girls while they were walking to school Monday morning.

It's less than a block two Trail Ridge Middle School girls had to walk from their apartments to the school at 75th Street and Quivira Road, but that didn't prevent a frightening encounter when they say they noticed a man standing behind a building just south of the school. According to police, at first the girls said the man waived at them, but then he exposed himself. The incident happened about 8:30 a.m.

"They were frightened when they saw him, but they did the right thing and ran to the school and went directly to the office," said Master Police Officer Dan Friesen.

Police searched the area, but the suspect was nowhere to be found.

Shawnee Mission School District officials sent out an automated voicemail to parents and notified officials at nearby Shawanoe Elementary, located just down the street on 75th.

This isn't the first time that there were reports of a man flashing children in the same neighborhood.

In February at the same apartment where Monday's victims were coming from, a similar incident happened with a man matching a similar description.

"Anytime you have something that could be a pattern, it is more concerning; however, we are still not certain this is the same individual," Friesen said.

Police will be patrolling all areas and are asking the public and children to be cautious until they can figure out who they are looking for.

"We don't know when they approach children what they have in mind as far as why are they choosing children to commit a sex crime," Friesen said.

The white male is further described as being in his mid-30s, between 5'8" and 5'11" tall, with possibly blonde hair and wearing a dark hoodie with the hood pulled up. The girls also reported seeing a white panel van parked near the area where the suspect was standing, but it is unknown whether or not the van was associated with the suspect.
