Toddler's fall from Hartford window under investigation

Posted: Updated:
HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A 2-year-old girl is recovering Tuesday after toppling nearly 20 feet from a second story window onto a driveway at a home on Capitol Avenue in Hartford on Monday night.

Now, investigators from both Hartford police and the Department of Children and Families are trying to determine exactly what happened.

Shawna Sanders fell out of a second-story window to the ground below.

Family members told Eyewitness News Shawna's no longer listed in critical condition while police try to figure out how the toddler fell.

"Sometime tomorrow, she will move from ICU to regular room," said the child's grandmother, Mary Ann Mitchell.

Mitchell said Shawna has no broken bones, just a lot of scrapes and bruises on her head and side.

Investigators have been at the scene since the incident was reported before 7 p.m. Monday.

"When she fell, she was going in and out, like her eyes was rolling in the back of her head," said eyewitness Yvette Pipkin.

Neighbors told Eyewitness News they heard screams and were stunned to find out what happened.

"I didn't know what to expect," said neighbor Edwin Rosa. "I thought someone got shot."

Neighbors said that after the fall they heard Shawna screaming and she was rushed off to Connecticut Children's Medical Center.

"I was very upset about it, and scared too," said great-uncle Matthew Hudson.

As for the investigation, police and the Department of Children and Families are speaking with the family to try and piece together how Shawna fell.

Mitchell told Eyewitness News she was watching Shawna along with her sister and brother and lost track of her for a split second while doing the laundry.

Eyewitness News did spot someone emerge from a car with state license plates that came to the home for a visit.

"The investigation is still ongoing. SID detectives are currently investigating it along with DCF," said Hartford police Lt. Brian Foley. "The baby is still over in CCMC, and the investigation is going to be ongoing for quite some time here."

Police could not recall if they had been to this home before for any kind of issues.

The Connecticut Department of Children and Families had no comment for Eyewitness News.

However, they provided information on how to keep children safe around open windows.
