INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

Authorities are investigating a possible hazardous materials incident in an Independence parking lot.

Police say a UPS tractor trailer carrying some kind of corrosive material began smoking shortly before 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

The driver of the truck decided to pull over into the first large parking lot he could find. That happened to be the K-Mart parking lot near Interstate 70 and Noland Road.

Independence police blocked off the parking lot. The driver of the cab disengaged the tandem trailers he was hauling and parked in a different part of the parking lot.

Hazardous materials crews from both Independence and Kansas City came to the scene, as did the Independence Fire Department.

Missouri Department of Transportation crews were also on the scene getting ready to shut down I-70 if the chemicals were to spill out of the trailer.

Also a large storm drain located nearby was secured with booms to prevent any possible contamination.

Crews told K-mart employees to stay inside as authorities secured the area before opening the smoking trailer.

Thermal imaging glasses showed crews that there was a hot package inside the back portion of the trailer.

By 9 a.m., crews got the situation under control without incident. It is still not clear what was caused the package to smoke.

No injuries were reported.
