PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A woman was seriously hurt when the pickup in which she and three other people were riding went off a cliff in a rugged area in the far east Valley on Tuesday morning. Apache Junction Fire Department officials say the badly injured woman is 21-year-old Caitlyn Stout.
The crash happened about 1 a.m. and Rural Metro firefighters reached the injured woman about 7 a.m., firefighters said. The Apache Junction Fire Department said the truck fell about 200 feet before landing upright.
Investigators say passenger Arthur James "AJ" Richie, 27, was able to climb back up the embankment. He then walked a long distance from the crash site in the Fish Creek area toward Canyon Lake when he was picked up by a motorist and taken to Tortilla Flats, where he called authorities. He was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare-Osborn.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety released the names of the other occupants. They are two backseat passengers - Genevieve Williams, 29, of Queen Creek, and Stout. The driver was identified as Jason McPeek, 24, of Gilbert.
Stout was ejected from the pickup and suffered severe head and facial trauma. Williams' stepfather, David Wilson, said Williams also suffered head injuries, but is expected to recover.
The car went off the cliff in the rugged Fish Creek area of Highway 88 between Roosevelt Lake and Apache Junction.
Eight to 10 fire units and 20 to 30 firefighters were at the scene to assist in the rescue.
No other information was immediately available.
