Shooting near elementary school prompts lockdown in east KC

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A Kansas City elementary school was placed on precautionary lockdown Monday as police investigated a shooting that left one person in serious condition.

The shooting happened at 12:30 p.m. at a home located in the 4700 block of Kensington Avenue, which is just west of Elmwood Avenue and north of Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard.

The victim was shot in the chest but was talking when police arrived on the scene.  Police said their injuries do not seem to be life-threatening.

Authorities said one suspect is in custody.

Immediately after the shooting, George Washington Carver Elementary School, located at 4600 Elmwood Ave., was placed on a precautionary lockdown. The lockdown was lifted shortly after 1 p.m.
