LENEXA, KS (KCTV) -

Police are seeking a man wanted in connection to an attempted robbery at one convenience store and robbery at a second store a few minutes later.

Lenexa police said a man entered JB's One Stop, located at 13094 West 95th St., about 4:15 a.m. Monday and approached the counter, asking the clerk for cigarettes.

As the clerk was getting the cigarettes, the suspect told the clerk he had a gun, police said.

"He asked him to open up the drawer or else," Linda Briuer, manager of JB's One Stop, said. "That's when my worker said, 'No, I'm not. Just leave.' He said, 'I'm going to shoot you if you don't give me the money.' The worker said, 'I'm not giving it to you, so you just better leave.'"

The suspect did not show his weapon.

The clerk told the suspect he was calling the police, and the suspect eventually left the store without any merchandise or money.

The suspect is described to be in his 20s, approximately 5'10" tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds and wearing a dark stocking hat and a dark wool jacket.

Briuer said this is the first time the store has faced a robbery attempt in its 25 years existence. She said she chided the clerk for not cooperating.

"I told him he shouldn't have done that," Briuer said. "You never put your life up against something like that. But he did and the guy left, thank goodness, without hurting anybody."

She said the clerk was pretty shook up over the experience, and she relieved him from working the register once she arrived.

A customer was in the store, which could be why he left so quickly when the clerk didn't cooperate.

Management has turned over surveillance footage to police.

A red 90s model two-door vehicle left the parking lot heading west on 95th Street.

Police said about 10 minutes later, a Quik Trip, located at 11070 Pflumm Rd., was robbed by the same suspect.

In this robbery, the suspect displayed a yellow box knife to the clerk and demanded cigarettes and cash.

The clerk gave the suspect an undetermined amount of cash and cigarettes. The suspect then walked out of the store.

There were no injuries in either cases.

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the culprit.

"They may recognize this person," Lenexa master police Officer Dan Friesen said. "It's good identifiable images. We always rely on someone saying, 'I know who that is.'"

A robbery at a convenience store on Lamar in Mission may be related to these two crimes in Lenexa, Friesen said. Officers in the two agencies are working together.

If you recognize the robber, call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

"We hope someone will recognize the images and give us a call," Friesen said. "Thank goodness, no one got hurt."
