It was a wild ride across Missouri and Kansas state lines for city, county and state law enforcement officials as a high-speed chase ended with two suspects in custody.
Trenton Wiseman, 23, and 29-year-old Jacob Abney are in the Atchison County, KS, jail facing a host of changes, including stolen vehicles and weapons violations that originate in Buchanan County, MO, but apparently started in Kansas City.
Buchanan County Capt. Mike Brock, Wiseman and Abney began their crime spree in Kansas City where they stole the first of two pickups Saturday.
After taking the first truck, Brock said the pair headed north into Platte County where they boosted a second pickup.
That was when their troubles started, as the owner of that truck heard and saw Wiseman and Abney stealing the truck, and called his brother who lives north of him, the direction the pair headed.
The brother hopped in his vehicle and managed to track down, and then follow, the two suspects who were approaching Atchison on U.S. 59.
Brock said he doesn't know how or why, but the suspect driving the stolen Platte County vehicle crashed the truck near Mud Lake Road.
Brock said he then jumped out of the pickup and fired shots at the man whose truck he had stolen, who had since joined his brother at the scene. No one was hit.
The man then jumped in the second stolen truck and headed into Atchison where the chase began.
Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie said the chase started with Wiseman and Abney fleeing out of Buchanan County into Kansas about 2 p.m. Saturday.
They were in Atchison when officers took up the chase, pursuing the suspects to Brown County, then farther west into Nemaha County, where the two men were finally caught.
Laurie said the suspects lost both passenger side tires in Atchison County, but still managed to drive their pickup into another two counties.
Atchison police along with sheriff's deputies caught the driver when the suspects' pickup got stuck in a mud road.
Meantime, the passenger jumped out of the truck and fled on foot.
Along with assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol's K-9 unit and officers from other agencies, the man was found in a ravine about a mile from the truck and some 700 yards from the road.
Numerous agencies assisted in the pursuit and capture of Wiseman and Abney. There were no officers injured in the incident.
