Two people are in the hospital Saturday after a shooting shut down Westport on a busy bar night.
Police said a man and a woman suffered minor injuries from gunshot wounds in an apparent drive-by shooting outside Gusto's Bar. The bar is located near Broadway Boulevard and Westport Road.
"We were over there, and we saw a car pull up, and about four shots went off, and I guess someone got shot," witness William Brown said. "We just heard the shots and walked over here and saw all this was happening."
Police said officers working off-duty heard shots fired at Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue just before 2 a.m.
Employees of the neighboring Gusto's Bar told officers the two shooting suspects were told to leave their establishment by security. The suspects left, but then returned and fired shots in the direction of the front entrance as they drove by.
While some witnesses said the two people were standing in front of the bar, others claimed the victims were in the bar and the shooter actually walked inside.
People KCTV5 talked to Saturday discussed the security in Westport compared to the heightened security at another entertainment district, the Country Club Plaza, to help keep juvenile violence down.
"I don't think it's disproportionate. I just think that the Plaza, right now the focus there is on kids and causing disruption. I think this is more of an isolated incident versus something that's taking place every week," one man said.
People KCTV5 talked to during the day on Saturday said they feel safe walking around Westport and see a fair amount of security patrolling the area.
So far, police have made no arrests in the case. They are asking that anybody with information about the suspects call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
