Mitchell Co. Pro Tennis Invitational adds women for first time

Posted: Updated:

It's been a Camilla tradition for the last 38 years, but this year is a first.

Some very talented tennis players have hit the courts at the Mitchell County Pro Tennis Invitational, but none of them have ever been women.

Until now.

For the first time in the history of the tournament, women players are in the field.

There's only four female entrants, but what a resume they all boast.

The four include two former NCAA national champions at the University of Georgia Lori Grey and Agata Cioroch, the former number one player in South America Nanely Tippens, and former USTA number 1 player Kristen McVitty.

The Invitational says they believed it was important to include women this year, and the entrants hope they can inspire younger women players.

"Tennis is both a female and male sport, but its definitely more of a man's sport," says Grey. "So for the females to come out, especially the junior girls, and see that, it's not just  junior tennis. They can go into college and they can come and play in events like this. I think it's very important."
