Woman traveling to Wichita makes emergency landing at Gardner airport

GARDNER, KS (KCTV) -

A woman described the scary moments in which she and her co-pilot fought to safely land her twin-engine plane that had a stuck landing gear.

"In about 6,500 hours, I've never bent metal on an airplane until today," Michelle Stauffer said.

The Cessna 414 had taken off with Stauffer bound for a meeting in Wichita. Stauffer realized the landing gear and backup system were failing.

She circled back to Gardner and called five mechanics from the air in a vain attempt to fix the problems. Her co-pilot read over the manual, and they took trouble-shooting steps. Eventually, she  realized she had to land with no landing gear and the plane's belly striking the runway.

After 40 years as a pilot, she said her training kicked in.

"A little unnerving," she said. "You do everything you're supposed to do.

No immediate estimate on damage, but Stauffer said the important thing is that no one was injured and a fire was not sparked during the land.

The emergency landing happened just before 10:30 a.m. Thursday at New Century Air Center.

There were no injuries reported.
