Tennis club's couples membership change causes uproar

Posted: Updated:
WESTWOOD, KS (KCTV) -

Some members of the Woodside Health & Tennis Club were upset because they were concerned by a change to the club's couples membership policy.

Some members thought that the couples membership rate was only being made available to legally married couples.

The club issued a clarifying statement. The membership rate is available to couples who reside at the same address.

"This includes both married heterosexual and homosexual couples, domestic partnerships and civil unions, as well as adult family members who reside together," the club said in a statement. "There is no proof of marriage license requirement, as has been erroneously communicated to a few members."

The club emphasized that it will not discriminate against anyone.

"We apologize for the miscommunication that stemmed from our working to update policies, which were in draft form," the statement says. "Woodside focuses on offering the best amenities in health, fitness, wellness and recreation for everyone, and we welcome all members, regardless of race, sexual orientation, creed, religion or gender."

The club said the previous policy had been abused by roommates and friends, prompting the new policy.

Some gay and lesbian leaders were concerned about the change and the wording.
