Crime Victims' Rights Week is being celebrated nationally, giving families across the country and in the Kansas City metro a chance to remember their loved ones.
KCTV5's Bonyen lee emceed Kansas City's awareness event at the KC Live Block in the Power and Light District where one victim of abuse shared his personal story that made headlines 14 years ago.
The event was a chance to remember and honor the stories behind National Crime Victims' Rights Week.
"My mother had gotten so angry with my brothers she dumped them in boiling hot water where they suffered high-degree burns which turned to gangrene and, with the starvation, killed them," Nathan Ross said.
Stories were told like Ross', or what's more infamously known in Kansas City as the Bass Case. Fourteen years ago, Ross' mother Mary Bass, murdered his two brothers, Larry and Gary Bass, after years of neglect and abuse. She is still in prison, serving eight consecutive life terms.
"The people who came into my life because they used their voices and decided to step up, made an impact and everyone needs to realize that they have that opportunity to help save someone," Ross said.
VictimNet helps connect families with resources that can help people like Ross move forward and even help others.
"Victims need to be honored and remembered and, I think, a lot of times they feel like they're forgotten. They get lost in the system," VictimNet President Lori Paquette said.
Ross said he's proud to be a part of the event and feels it's a necessary thing.
"This week really highlights what I think all of us in the child welfare system work towards, all of us in the Crime Victims Advocates work towards - awareness, having prevention and prosecution for those who commit crimes on our most vulnerable population - our children and people in general," Ross said.
