Eric Browder says a family member is putting out jars with the picture of his daughter who passed away in her sleep. He says that money never made it to the funeral home to pay for her funeral expenses.
SWEET SPRINGS, MO (KCTV) -
A grieving father is furious because he says someone is trying to profit from the sudden death of his 3-month-old daughter.
Eric Browder said a family member is putting out jars with the picture of his daughter who passed away in her sleep. He said that money never made it to the funeral home to pay for her funeral expenses.
"She was beautiful. She was four pounds and 10 ounces at birth. She was very, very premature," Browder said.
Jaydah Yvette Wood was born last year on Dec. 20. She died suddenly on April 3.
"I had no insurance whatsoever. I wasn't expecting this to happen, and I wasn't prepared for it," he said.
Browder said local businesses graciously allowed him to place jars to raise funds for his daughter's funeral. The funeral cost $1,837.40.
Browder said with the help of family, friends and kind strangers, the total due is now about $400.
He said he learned a family member and another person were collecting donations around the Lake of the Ozarks but that money never went to the funeral home.
"They are taking the money and just spending it," Browder said.
Browder said a police officer contacted him.
"Because there was a jar there, and the police officer asked us about it, and I said 'no those are not our jars.' I've called Sedalia and Warsaw. I've called Lincoln. I've called all these different police agencies," he said.
Browder pulled his jars from businesses in the Sweet Springs area because he didn't want people to possibly donate to jars that were not legitimate.
"I can't even mourn because I'm too caught up with trying to stop (others) from using my daughter for (their) own personal gain," Browder said.
So far, no one is charged with any crime.
Browder said the family still owes about $400 to the Campbell-Lewis funeral home in Marshall, MO.
The Saline County Sheriff said the child's death appears to be accidental. The coroner is waiting on final lab results.
The family believes she may have died from sudden infant death syndrome.
