Research Medical Center to get new burn unit

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The metro will get a new burn center before the year is over, and it will do more than just trauma response.

"Having a burn center at Research adds one more piece to the care we already provide. It makes us a more comprehensive center, allows us to fully treat those patients and give them the best care available," said Matt Sogard, the chief operating officer at Research Medical Center.

Sogard said Kansas City needs a new burn center.

"We reviewed demand data and think there's an unmet need for burn patients in the region. We think this will be a regional draw. It fits well with our level one trauma center. It fits well with what we do," he said.

Kansas City firefighters who transport burn victims agree that the closer the burn center, the better.

"So usually when we have these problems, we have a large number of patients that need a burn center," Tom Collins with the Kansas City Fire Department said.

The new burn center, set to open Oct. 1, is a collaboration between Research and Grossman Burn Center, which operates several similar burn centers in California and Arizona.

"Grossman burn centers have been operating for 40 years, Grossman is the largest privately owned plastic surgery-based burn program in the country," Sogard said.

Right now, the only American Burn Association-certified burn center sits across the state line at the University of Kansas Hospital.

"KU runs a very nice burn center. Our opening of a burn center is to continue to meet the needs of the community. It's to get a burn center operating on the Missouri side. We think there's plenty of demand in this region for two burn centers to operate," Sogard said. "We're excited about what ours will bring to the community."

The center will have eight beds, ready to care for any type of burn.
