Plainville woman loses chicken fight

PLAINVILLE, CT (WFSB) -

A Plainville woman was fighting to keep her hens after town officials said she violated zoning laws when she adopted nine chickens last year.

The Plainville Planning and Zoning Commission held a public hearing Tuesday night to discuss an ordinance that reduces the required lot size for the keeping of hens.

The current zoning regulations state that residents cannot have chickens on lots that are less than 87,120 square feet.

Resident Roberta Lalama, of Bohemia Street, requested that the regulations be changed because her yard is a little more than 21,000 square feet.

"Mama Cluck," as she is known, wanted to keep her chickens on her property, but the Planning and Zoning Commission rejected the amendment to let her keep them.

However, some members of the Planning and Zoning Commission said they would be interested in looking at this again if more restrictions and rules were put into place.

"I'm disappointed. I'm not surprised. It was a bare bones regulation that I proposed, but I expected them to be a little more open-minded." Lalama said after the meeting.

Since the beginning of this year, Lalama told Eyewitness News she's collected more than 300 signatures from people who support her. For now, she is preparing to say goodbye.

"They're my pets, they're my friends," she said. "They're my babies."

Lalama told Eyewitness News she is thinking about sending her hens to a farm nearby.
