WOODBRIDGE, CT (WFSB) -

The town of Woodbridge is in mourning after learning First Selectman Edward Sheehy has died.

Town Hall officials confirmed to Channel 3 Eyewitness News that Sheehy died suddenly on Monday night, but did not say what lead to Sheehy's death.

"With profound sadness the Town of Woodbridge announces the sudden passing of First Selectman Edward Maum Sheehy," town officials said in a statement. "Information about funeral arrangements will be forthcoming. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sheehy family at this difficult time."

Woodbridge is a smaller community with just under 10,000 residents and is located about five miles from New Haven.

According to the Woodbridge Connecticut Democrats' website, Sheehy served as First Selectman of Woodbridge since 2006. On Jan. 17, the Democratic Caucus for the town was held and the party unanimously endorsed Sheehy for the May 6 Municipal Election.

"Ed truly loved the Town of Woodbridge and its people, many of whom he became close friends with over the years and whose lives he touched in so many ways," said Gov. Dannel P. Malloy in statement. "Through his work as a civic leader, he dedicated himself to improving his community. His sudden passing comes with great sadness, and my condolences go out to his wife, Eleanor, and the rest of his family and friends."
