Public opposition mounts to single terminal at KCI

Posted: Updated:

As Kansas City Council members move closer to approving a single terminal at Kansas City International Airport, public opposition mounts.

Aviation officials say the $1.2 billion project is needed, but passengers say the current setup is convenient and it would be a waste of money.

Friends of KCI, a group opposed to the single terminal, gathered 165 signatures in opposition in an effort to halt construction.

But the City Attorney's Office ruled that the petition is invalid because the council thus far has only approved a resolution. The council has not passed an ordinance or authorized actual construction.

John Murphy of Friends of KCI says this is just round one of a lengthy battle.

"We're not politicians, professionals," Murphy said. "We've never tried to do anything like this. We want the citizens of Kansas City to vote if they want a new airport or not."

While no Kansas City general fund dollars would be used on the airport construction, federal tax dollars and airfare ticket surcharges would pay for the costs.

"They are spending $1.2 billion on an unnecessary airport," Murphy said. "Kansas City has high crime, 110 murders a year, crumbling streets and parks and poor schools. Focusing on something like this, we think, is wrong."

Public hearings will be held. But Mark VanLoh, director of aviation for Kansas City, makes clear he believes there is no doubt that Kansas City needs a new airport, which would be built on the site of Terminal A.

Murphy vows to do what it takes to stop this from occurring.
