Meeting to discuss possible cuts to Glastonbury school budget

GLASTONBURY, CT (WFSB) -

Glastonbury parents will have the opportunity to speak out about a possible cut to the school budget at public hearing Monday night.

The meeting comes after last month, despite a strong protest from parents, the town council approved a cut of $800,000.

Rising costs, growing retirements, and tough fiscal times have made town officials tighten their belts.

Right now, the council is proposing to cut $800,000 from a budget of more than $94 million.

Last year, about $600,000 was cut.

At the last public hearing, angry parents said they feared class sizes would get bigger while the overall reputation of the school would dwindle.

Some parents said they don't understand how the school could give incoming high school students iPads, but cut the overall budget.

Glastonbury has long held a reputation of having one of the top public school systems in the state.

"My kids really took advantage of that," said parent Ellen Michalik. "They were very well prepared when they went on to college."

Residents told Eyewitness News if the council can't add more funds, at the very least,  they should keep it the way it is.

"If they maintain what they have right now and not take away money, but more money would help with other things," said parent Renee Carson. "If they can, that would be great. The whole security thing has to be ramped up too in my opinion."

The hearing will be inside the council chambers at town hall, located at 2155 Main St., at 7:30 p.m. There will be a public comment portion before the decision.
