VERNON, CT (WFSB) -

The Vernon Police Department responded to a domestic violence call and also found a banned assault weapon.

Officers said they arrested 24-year-old Eric Burgin on Sunday when they found an illegal but unloaded AK-47 assault rifle in the apartment he shared with his girlfriend.

Police told Eyewitness News Burgin's gun is banned because it has a folding stock and a silencer.

Burgin was also arrested for allegedly striking his girlfriend. She did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

A protective order said Burgin must turn over any weapons to police.
