Police are continuing to search for a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman after a crash in Southington on Thursday night.
According to police, an unidentified woman was driving on North Shuttle Street around 10 p.m. and after turning onto Long Bottom Road she told police a car, which is being described as black 2003-2006 Nissan Altima, bumped into the rear of her car.
The victim told police that she pulled over to observe and found no damage on either vehicle.
"It was her and the suspect and at that point once, they went out to inspect the vehicles the sexual assault took place at that location," said Southington Police Lt. Michael Baribault.
Police said it appears that suspect hit the woman's car on purpose to get her to stop.
The suspect is being described as being a man about 30 years old with a slender build, short hair and darker skin tone. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, with darker baggy jeans at the time of the incident, police said.
The car has a silver Nissan symbol on the front and a front license plate bracket without a registration plate. The victim told police that the car was playing loud music at the time of crash.
Police told Eyewitness News that they are actively investigating the incident.
Investigators conducted a checkpoint on Friday night, but it did not turn up any leads.
The Southington Police Department wanted to remind residents that when you are involved in an crash that you don't have to get out of the vehicle.
Police told Eyewitness News if a crash occurs in a dark isolated area, they said it's best to give them a call right away.
"If you're in a remote area such as that, absolutely if you do feel that you need to pull over, lock your doors, don't let anybody approach you, immediately call 911," Baribault said.
During the day, the area is heavily traveled by bikers, joggers and bike riders, however police said the nearby woods and reservoir make it an isolated location.
"I don't think too many people travel this road at nighttime," said Carlos Xavier, who was jogging Monday afternoon.
Anyone with any information is asked to call the Southington Police Department at 860-378-1644 or 860-621-0101.
