A motorist who appeared to go into cardiac arrest died after he was pulled over and placed in handcuffs by Arizona Department of Public Safety officers.
The Medical Examiner's Office is trying to determine the exact cause of the 54-year-old man's death.
DPS detectives assigned to the auto theft task force were in an unmarked but emergency-equipped vehicle when they saw the motorist commit a traffic violation southbound on Interstate 17 north of Bethany Home Road Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Detectives attempted to stop the vehicle but the motorist kept on driving. Information was broadcast to other units in the area and a patrol officer observed the vehicle in the area of Interstate 10 and the 19th Avenue ramp.
This time, the motorist stopped and was taken into custody for failing to yield for the detectives.
The suspect and his vehicle were taken to the parking lot of the restaurant on the northwest corner of N. 7th Avenue and W. Roosevelt.
While handcuffed in the rear of the DPS patrol vehicle, the suspect began to complain of being hot and not feeling well, investigators said. Officers removed the suspect from the car and became concerned about his appearance and the way he was acting.
Phoenix Fire rescue was called to the location and, as the paramedics attempted to render aid, the suspect began to struggle against their efforts while telling the officers he had killed his wife and she was in the trunk of his car, authorities said.
DPS and Phoenix officers, who had arrived to the scene, assisted paramedics in securing the suspect and he was placed on a stretcher.
The paramedics had just begun transporting the suspect to a local hospital when he appeared to go into what appeared to be cardiac arrest, DPS said. Paramedics worked on the suspect until they reached the hospital.
Emergency room personnel continued to work on the suspect but he did not respond and he was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m.
The investigation is continuing. There was no word on whether there was a body in the trunk of the car.
