Crews investigate fire that destroyed home in Winsted

Posted: Updated:

A family of nine has been displaced after a house fire spread to two other homes in Winsted on Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to a fire at a home on Thibault Avenue about 12:30 p.m.

"The flames were coming from the side, the top, and then you can kind of see a big hole and see the whole house," said eyewitness Gabriel Ortiz.

Crews shut down the street so they could get the fire under control, but it was challenging.

Upon arrival, officials said everyone was able to be evacuated safely.

"We had some minor basic injuries due to some of the overhaul that we were doing," said Robert Shopey of the Winsted Fire Department. "But other than that, the firefighters, residents are all safe."

The flames spread from the home to the nearby residences and caused the siding on both to melt, officials said.

"There is only eight to 10 feet of separation between the houses, so we do have some melted siding on the others houses," Shopey said. "But don't have any fire extension to the others, so we were very lucky."

The home is a total loss, according to fire officials.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family, which consisted of four adults and five children including two teenagers.

The family did have some pets, including four dogs, a cat and birds; however, they did lose two hamsters and a lizard.

Many residents in the area told Eyewitness News they were in disbelief seeing this unfold.

"We were right there, right next to my friend," Ortiz said. "It was kind of scary because he lives next door."

The cause of fire is under investigation.
