NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The bassist for the rock group 3 Doors Down has been charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication after a fatal crash late Friday night on Interstate 40 near Hermitage.

Officers said Robert Todd Harrell, 41, who lives in Mt. Juliet, TN, was driving a 2011 Cadillac CTS westbound on I-40 at a high rate of speed when his car clipped a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup.

The pickup, driven by Paul Howard Shoulders Jr., 47, of Horseshoe Drive, went out of control, struck a guardrail, traveled down an embankment and overturned, police said.

Shoulders was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected, according to investigators. He was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Police said Harrell's vehicle struck the retaining wall and stopped about a quarter of a mile away.

Officers said Harrell showed indications of impairment during field sobriety tests and appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicant. Police said he acknowledged consuming hard cider and taking prescription Lortab and Xanax. A search warrant was obtained for a mandatory blood sample from Harrell.

Harrell is also charged with bringing controlled substances into the jail. During a search at the booking room, Davidson County Sheriff's deputies discovered a plastic bag concealed in Harrell's sock that contained 8 Xanax pills, 24 Oxycodone pills and 4 Oxymorphone pills.

A message on the official website for 3 Doors Down read, "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Howard Shoulders, Jr. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this difficult time."

Harrell was released Tuesday on $100,000 bond, police said.
