Bridgeport police arrest 3 people after overnight burglary

BRIDGEPORT, CT (WFSB) -

Three men are under arrest after smashing through a wall to rob a cell phone store on Main Street in Bridgeport early Thursday morning.

Police said they were called to the AT&T store at 4713 Main St. shortly before 3:30 a.m. after the burglar alarm went off.

Police said it appears as though the suspects first broke through a window at the Chinese restaurant, leaving shattered glass across the sidewalk.

Then, they tried to get through the wall to the AT&T store.

Police said it turns out when the suspects smashed their way through the cinder block wall with a sledgehammer. It set off the alarm at the AT&T store.

"It sounds like something out of a movie," said neighbor Bob Michaels.

That alerted both the police and the store owner, who was at home sleeping.

Police said he was able to watch surveillance video from his house, and give officers descriptions of the suspects.

Neighbors said they were surprised to find a slew of police on Main Street.

"I asked (the police officer) what happened and said we had a break-in, and I was surprised to see the number of cars here," Michaels said. "I could actually see the flashing police lights coming down the street."

Bridgeport's police spokesperson told Eyewitness News one of the arriving officers saw a suspect turning towards him holding what he thought could be a weapon and fired several shots.

Nobody was hurt, but the suspects took off on foot.

All three were caught a short time later.

"It scares us, we're right here in the neighborhood with the gunshots," said neighbor Jay Shah.

Jose Simmons of Brooklyn, NY, Ernest Deveaux of Norristown, Pa. and Derrick Allen of Brooklyn, NY were arrested.

All three were charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree larceny, first-degree criminal mischief, possession of burglary tools and interfering with police.

Police said there have been several, recent "similar commercial burglaries" in Bridgeport and investigators are trying to determine if there is a link.

Two officers were also being treated for some injuries suffered from a fall during that foot chase. Their injuries were non life-threatening, police said.

A tow truck took away a damaged police cruiser. Eyewitness News was told the damage was from a minor car accident that happened when another officer pulled into the driveway.

Police also said they have seized a white Cadillac, which they believe was the getaway car.

Shah, who runs a nearby convenience store, said he was concerned to hear of the methods those thieves used just across the street.

"Nowadays people are desperate," he said. "They'll try to do anything."
